It is hard to believe that more than 75 years have passed since Anne Frank met her tragic death in the concentration camp in Auschwitz. It was the diehard belief of the German Nazi regime that all Jews in Europe, in fact across the world should be wiped off the face of the earth. Ironically, Otto Frank, Anne’s father, decided to emigrate from Germany to Holland just to escape such a fate. Well, the Nazis swept across Western Europe in no time, and the Netherlands like Belgium and France, were quickly conquered by the Germans, and the annihilation program kicked into gear. As in Germany, Jews in conquered territories and countries were subjected to harsh and illogical regulations. For instance, Dutch Jews were forbidden to sit in their own gardens after 8 pm. For two years, the Franks and some of their friends decided to hide in the annex in Otto’s spice factory. It was there and during that time that Anne composed her now world-famous diary, giving its readers a glimpse into their sad existence. She had discussed many topics in her diary, such as love, sex, and mythology. Although she was surrounded by her family and friends in the annex, Anne felt lonely... Sadly, the family got caught(there are persistent rumors they were betrayed) and sent off to Auschwitz, where Anne perished.
I think it is a great diary, and everyone should read it to understand the pain and fear of the Jewish community at that period. However, in my opinion, many Jews have not learned or remembered the tragic lessons of persecution and oppression at the hands of the Nazis considering the oppression of the Palestinians in Israel.
